So you’re ready to start working from ‘home.’
You have your computer. You have access to the internet. You have the will and desire to gain more flexibility, autonomy, and freedom in your life.
You’ve come to the right place.
The next thing you need to figure out is how you’re going to do this. And the way I recommend is to develop a ‘location independent’ skill.
Again, this is a skill you can do from ANYWHERE — meaning as long as you’ve got a computer and access to the internet, you’ll be able to make a living.
So how do you choose a location independent skill?
The good news is that there are so many different skills to choose from — and chances are, you’ll be able to find a skill that’s perfect for you.
But let’s make this a bit easier.
Have you ever heard of Upwork? Upwork is a platform where freelancers, businesses and professionals connect to do work together.
And the way it works is like this:
An individual or a business needs something done. They look on Upwork for someone who can do it. They find someone and hire them to do the project. Services are then exchanged for money. And as long as the project is completed successfully, everyone walks away happy.
That’s Upwork in a nutshell.
So why am I telling you this?
Well, Upwork is where I started making some real money online. It was a piece of cake to get started. The platform itself handles everything from invoices to payments to messaging and disputes, so it’s really, really helpful for a beginner. And it’s also a great place to dip your toes for the first time into making money online. I really can’t recommend it highly enough.
Now of course, Upwork isn’t the only platform out there that does this. It’s also nowhere near the best way for businesses, professionals, and freelancers to connect. But again, it is great for a beginner — and that’s why we’re here.
You’re a beginner.
You’ve never done this before.
And you need an easy way to get started.
Make sense? Wonderful.
So what does this have to do with choosing a location independent skill?
Quite a bit, actually.
You see, when someone goes on Upwork looking for a freelancer, they’re able to narrow their search by choosing from a list of categories. This list is actually composed of different freelancer skills which are in high-demand on the platform. Which means if a skill is on the list, it’s fair to assume quite a few businesses and professionals are hiring for them.
Which also means you could be the one reaping those rewards.
All you need to do is choose the right skill.
Upwork makes that easy.
Check out this list of categories on their site:
Now let me ask you something…
Is there anything on that list that you can do? Is there anything on that list that you’d be willing to learn? Is there anything on that list that you’d be happy to do and get better at every day?
Social media? Graphic design? Photography? Writing?
There’s likely something on that list you can already do. And if there isn’t, I can almost guarantee there’s something you can learn quickly and easily.
But for now, I’d like to leave you with an exercise.
Look over that list and ask yourself:
“Is there anything here I can see myself doing?”
Really think about it. Imagine yourself already doing it. Picture what life would be like if you were making a living doing that skill.
You can have ZERO experience, too. It doesn’t matter. Don’t let your limiting beliefs get in the way. If something interests you, then consider it. You’ll be able to fill in the gaps later. I promise you that.
Do you have anything in mind?
If you do, then this is looking really, really good for you, my friend.
We’ll talk about where to go from here in the next one.
