How to Stay Motivated to Reach Your Goals

“How do I stay motivated to reach my goals?”

This is a question that pops up all the time.

People want to know how to overcome their own propensity to procrastinate and ‘put things on hold.’ They want to know how to light a fire under their asses so they can actually get shit done.

The truth is…

Staying motivated isn’t as cut and dry as you think it is.

What works for one person may not work for the other. It’s a matter of trying things out to see what works for you — much like I’ve been doing for myself.

But there is one factor that reigns supreme above the rest.

A factor that remains consistent no matter who you are or how you approach ‘staying on track.’

And that factor is: Clarity.

What do I mean by that?

What does clarity have to do with staying motivated?

Here’s the deal:

When you have a clear vision of where you want to go, it’s much easier to visualize yourself actually being there. You can see the end result. You can feel the end result. And you have a basic understanding of what it means to cross the finish line.

But if you don’t have a clear vision of where you want to go, everything breaks down. The path isn’t clear. The end result isn’t clear. And what it means to succeed is hazy to you, at best. This lack of clarity is exactly what poisons motivation. I mean, why need it if you have no idea where you’re going?

The solution is to do as Stephen R. Covey suggests in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Begin with the end in mind.

Meaning…

Know where you’re going.

Visualize yourself already being there.

Feel what it feels like to climb the mountain and succeed.

The more you can do this, the more motivated you’ll become to bring your vision into reality.

You’ll create a fire within yourself that would take a tsunami to extinguish.

Begin with the end in mind.

Gain CLARITY…

And motivation will take care of itself.
