What a Blocked Gutter Can Teach You About a Healthy Mind

blocked gutter

I have this block in my gutter.

I haven’t got up to examine it yet, but I’m pretty sure it’s been that way for quite some time.

The reason I say that is because whenever it rains, the water accumulates in one spot and pours over the side. And right underneath that spot is where the ground caved in.

Of course, this all happened before we moved into the house and the ground no longer has a big hole in it.

BUT — the gutter is still very much plugged up.

AND — the waterfall that pours over the side is still very much there.

Left unchecked, I’m sure it could happen all over again. So I’ll have to get up there and clean those gutters out.

But the whole thing got me thinking about life and how so many people neglect to clean the ‘gutters’ of their own mind.

They let stresses and anxieties build up without ever addressing or releasing them. As a result, it starts pouring over into their life.

And just as the ground can absorb some of the water, someone’s life, too, can absorb some of the stress. But it can’t absorb all of it. Eventually, the water builds up to a point where the ground has no choice but to cave in.

The same is true when you let stresses and anxieties build up in your life for too long. Sooner or later, your ‘inner’ world begins to cave and crumble. And then you’re left with a big gaping hole you need to fill up and fix.

So do yourself a favor and clean your ‘gutters’ often.

If you don’t, something’s gonna give — and at that point, the damage is already done.

So address it early.

Address it often.

And save your world from caving in.
